Description

Tert-Butyl sulfamoylcarbamate is an antibacterial agent which inhibits the growth of gram-negative bacteria by binding to the active site of β-lactamase enzymes. It has been shown to be effective against Pseudomonas aeruginosa, a common cause of hospital infections. This compound is also used as a protective agent in amines and sulfuric acid esters, such as sulfonyl chlorides. Tert-butyl sulfamoylcarbamate can be synthesized by reacting tert-butyl carbamate with chloroacetic acid in an exothermic reaction at cryogenic temperatures. The reaction can be conducted under basic conditions or in the presence of a base catalyst, such as potassium hydroxide or sodium ethoxide. Tert-Butyl sulfamoylcarbamate can be isolated by removing solvent in vacuo and recrystallizing from diethylether at reaction temperatures below 30°C.
