(+)-Borneol is a monoterpene alcohol that is found in plants such as Angelica Dahurica, Curcuma aromatica, and Salvia miltiorrhiza. It has been shown to have synergistic effects when combined with glycol ethers. (+)-Borneol inhibits the activity of the enzyme acetylcholinesterase (AChE) by binding to its active site and inhibiting the breakdown of acetylcholine, which leads to an accumulation of this neurotransmitter in the synaptic cleft. This effect can be used for treatments of Alzheimer’s disease and other conditions involving memory loss or dementia. The hydrolysis products of (+)-borneol are borneol, bornyl acetate, and linalool. These compounds have also been shown to exhibit significant cytotoxicity against cancer cells.
