1-Bromobenzocyclobutene is a reactive monomer that is used in the production of coatings, adhesives, and elastomers. It can be synthesized from bromoacetone and benzoyl chloride in the presence of magnesium. 1-Bromobenzocyclobutene polymerizes rapidly at room temperature to form polymers with high molecular weights. The reaction is exothermic, which causes an increase in the temperature of the system as polymerization proceeds. This product has a hydroxyl group that allows it to react with various other compounds such as chlorides and amines.
