Bis(benzonitrile)dichloroplatinum (II) is an isomeric mixture of cis- and trans-dichloroplatinum (II). The compound has a nitrogen atom that can act as a nucleophile, undergoing nucleophilic attack on a chloride ion. This process is assisted by the chelate ring, which provides additional coordination sites for the chloride ion. Bis(benzonitrile)dichloroplatinum (II) is synthesized from palladium complexes and chlorine, with x-ray absorption spectroscopy showing that it has a steric interaction between two adjacent nitrogens. It can react with other compounds under metathesis reactions to form new products.
