Description

3-Bromopropionaldehyde dimethylacetal is a chiral organic compound that inhibits nicotine's inhibitory potency. It has been shown to be an effective inhibitor of hydroxy group and trans-stilbene, with a KI value of less than 0.2 mmol/L. 3-Bromopropionaldehyde dimethylacetal is synthesized by the reaction of two equivalents of acetaldehyde with two equivalents of propionyl chloride in the presence of silicon tetrachloride, yielding 3-bromopropionaldehyde as the major product. The reaction is completed in one hour at room temperature and under an inert atmosphere. The product can be purified by recrystallization from acetone or hexane. 3-Bromopropionaldehyde dimethylacetal has shown potent inhibition against aldehydes, including aromatic aldehydes, aliphatic aldehydes, and cyclic ketones.
