Spiperone is a piperidine-based drug that competes with the neurotransmitter dopamine for binding to the dopamine D2 receptor. It has been shown to interact with 5-HT2A and D2 receptors in rats, which may be due to its amide group. Spiperone has also been shown to block the effects of amphetamine, cocaine and methamphetamine in mice. Spiperone has been shown to have anti-inflammatory properties, possibly due to its ability to inhibit prostaglandin synthesis. Spiperone is not a substrate for monoamine oxidase A (MAO-A) or MAO-B, and can be used as an antidepressant medication in patients who are taking MAO inhibitors.
