1-Butoxy-4-ethynylbenzene is a cationic, efficient and chemoselective tetrasubstituted tosylate that has been used in the synthesis of various cycloisomerizations. The first example of this application was in the synthesis of 1,2,3,4-tetrahydroisoquinolines by reaction with propargylamines. This new reagent has been shown to be more efficient than other tosylates for the synthesis of these compounds. Other examples include its use in the total synthesis of (+)-salsolidine and (+)-dibenzalacetone. This reagent also has applications in biomolecular chemistry as it can be used as an isocyanate or propargylamine equivalent.
