5-Bromo-6-methylpyrimidin-4-ol is an organic solvent that is used in the preparation of acetone, dimethylsulfoxide and cyclic interferon. It is also present in a number of antiviral agents, such as AZT and 5-bromo-6-(2-(hydroxymethyl)pyrrolidin-1-yl)-5H-[1]pyrrole[3,4,-b]indole. This chemical has been shown to inhibit human leukocytes by binding to proteins on the cell surface. The active form of this chemical is acetaldehyde, which binds to xanthine oxidase and inhibits the formation of uric acid.
