Benzyl tiglate is a chemical that is the ester of benzoic acid and isovaleric acid. It has been shown to have antibacterial properties against gram-positive bacteria, such as Staphylococcus aureus, and gram-negative bacteria, such as Escherichia coli. Benzyl tiglate has also been shown to be effective in controlling the growth of some types of yeast and fungi, such as Candida albicans. The molecule has a low odor threshold (1.5 ppm) and is used commercially as a deodorizer for various products, including plastics and textiles. The chemical structure resembles benzyl esters, which are derived from fatty acids (e.g., oleic acid).
