Description

Benzyltrichlorosilane is a compound that has been shown to be an effective corrosion inhibitor. It is used as a coating on steel structures, such as bridges and buildings, to prevent corrosion. The compound also shows some promise as a catalyst for reactions involving hydrogen chloride and benzyl groups. This compound has been shown to have no adverse effects on the environment and can be synthesized by reacting deionized water with hydrogen fluoride in the presence of hydrogen chloride. Benzyltrichlorosilane is commercially available in powder form, although it can also be prepared by heating benzylchlorosilanes with chlorodimethylsilane in an inert atmosphere.
