It can react with phosphorus pentoxide to form the corresponding phosphite ester, which is more soluble than the pyrocatechol. 4-tert-Butylpyrocatechol has been shown to have antioxidative properties and can inhibit lipid peroxidation in vitro. This compound also has a number of biochemically active properties, including enzyme activities and transfer reactions. The reaction between 4-tert-butylpyrocatechol and methyl ethyl ether was studied using an experimental model, preparative HPLC, and surface methodology.
