Description

BAPTA-tetrapotassium salt is a calcium chelator that binds to extracellular calcium ions. It has been shown to have potentiation effects on neurotransmission and is used in cell culture. BAPTA-tetrapotassium salt has been shown to decrease the intracellular calcium concentration, which may be due to its ability to inhibit the uptake of extracellular calcium ions. The drug also has a potentiation effect on neurons and is used in clinical relevance studies. BAPTA-tetrapotassium salt can be used as an intracellular probe for measuring changes in neuronal activity, such as cell depolarization, or it can be used in imaging studies of brain function. This drug also has a neuroprotective effect that may be due to its inhibition of phospholipase C, preventing the release of arachidonic acid from membrane phospholipids.
