Beclomethasone is a synthetic glucocorticoid that has significant effects on the bronchial system. It is used for the treatment of bronchial asthma and other diseases of the airways. Beclomethasone may be administered by inhalation, orally, or topically. Beclomethasone binds to cytoplasmic receptors in target cells and inhibits phospholipases, which are enzymes that release arachidonic acid from cell membranes. This process inhibits the production of leukotrienes, prostaglandins, and thromboxanes-all compounds that have been implicated in inflammation and bronchial asthma. The pharmacokinetic profile of Beclomethasone includes a high volume of distribution and low protein binding. Beclomethasone has been shown to inhibit nuclear receptors such as PPARα and GR, which regulate gene transcription for lipid metabolism.
