9-[[2-Benzyloxy-1-(benzyloxymethyl)-ethoxy]-methyl]-6-chloroguanine (BZEG) is a molecular probe that has been used to detect viruses in acute phase. It can also increase the severity of an infection caused by coxsackievirus. BZEG is also able to neutralize virus and prevent replication. This compound has been shown to bind with high affinity to viral nucleic acid, causing it to precipitate, which allows for its detection by immunofluorescence staining. 9-[[2-Benzyloxy-1-(benzyloxymethyl)-ethoxy]-methyl]-6-chloroguanine has been used as an antimicrobial agent against bacteria such as Staphylococcus aureus and Pseudomonas aeruginosa.
