N-(2-Boc-amino)ethyl maleimide is a prodrug that hydrolyzes to form the active N-terminal amine, which can react with esterases in cells to form an intermediate reactive species. This reacts with DNA and RNA to inhibit cell growth and induce apoptosis. N-(2-Boc-amino)ethyl maleimide has been shown to have antitumor activity against HL-60 cells, which are derived from a human promyelocytic leukemia cell line.
