Description

5-Bromo-1-pentyne (5BP) is a radical chain that is a part of the enzymatic antioxidant system. It is not an enzyme, but it catalyzes the decomposition of hydrogen peroxide to water and oxygen. 5BP also has a cytotoxic effect on cancer cells as well as antimicrobial activity against bacteria and fungi. 5BP binds to the pharmacophore of theophylline, which is structurally similar to 5BP. This binding may be responsible for the observed inhibition of theophylline metabolism by CYP1A2.
5BP also has been shown to inhibit neutrophil function, which may be due to its ability to inhibit protein synthesis in neutrophils by binding with ribosomes in these cells.
