Buthionine sulfoximine (BSO) is a sulfoximine that inhibits the enzyme glutathione reductase. It is used as an experimental model for oxidative injury. BSO is also known to cause cell death through reactive oxygen species and cell membrane damage, which leads to interference with energy metabolism and the inhibition of DNA synthesis. This drug has been shown to have minimal toxicity in experimental models and no adverse effects on human erythrocytes.
