4-Bromo-3-fluorobenzoic acid (4BFBA) is a serotonin uptake inhibitor. It has been shown to inhibit the uptake of serotonin in human cancer cells, and is categorized as a 5HT1A receptor agonist. 4BFBA has also been shown to induce cancer cell death in prostate cancer xenografts in nude mice. 4BFBA was found to be a potent inhibitor of the enzyme that catalyzes the conversion of 5-hydroxytryptophan into serotonin, thus preventing the production of serotonin from tryptophan. In addition, 4BFBA competitively inhibits the binding of serotonin to its receptors on nerve endings, which prevents stimulation and neurotransmitter release. The inhibition of this enzyme by 4BFBA may lead to an increase in depression due to decreased levels of serotonin in the brain. However, this effect has not been confirmed with experiments on humans.
