• Description: 2-Benzoylbenzoic acid methyl ester (2BABME) is a silicone that is used in the manufacturing of polyurethane foams, sealants, and adhesives. It has been shown to have anti-tumor properties. 2BABME was found to inhibit the proliferation of lung fibroblasts and induce apoptosis via induction of caspase-3/7 activity. The production of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and release of cytochrome C from mitochondria are also important factors in the induction of apoptosis by 2BABME. 2BABME induces apoptosis pathways by activating proapoptotic members of the Bcl-2 family, such as Bid, Bad, and Bax. The cytotoxic effects are enhanced by inhibition of ROS production or inhibition of mitochondrial membrane potential. This chemical is not mutagenic or genotoxic in vitro or in vivo.
