• Description: 4-Bromomandelic acid is a chemical with the molecular formula CHBrO. It is an acid that can be found in the form of a solution at room temperature. It is soluble in water and alcohols, but not in ether or chloroform. 4-Bromomandelic acid is used as a reagent for the identification of carbohydrates and other organic compounds by phase chromatography. 4-Bromomandelic acid can be recycled from triticum aestivum (wheat) straw by washing with hydrochloric acid to remove impurities. The purified product can then be crystallized from trifluoroacetic acid or acetic anhydride, followed by backpressure to remove excess solvent. It has been shown that binding constants for metal ions are increased in the presence of p-hydroxybenzoic acid or biphenyl, which has led to its use as a catalyst for reactions involving these substances.
