2-Bromovaleric acid is a pentenoic acid that can be synthesized from valeric acid. It has been shown to have an electron affinity of 1.2 eV, with a photoelectron peak at 2.6 eV. This compound has been used as a synthetic precursor in the preparation of ethyl esters and other derivatives of this type, which are then used in radiation chemistry experiments. Bromovaleric acid has been shown to be a good candidate for preventing damage to the axial skeleton caused by radiation exposure, although it is not effective against other types of tissue damage, such as brain or liver damage.
2-Bromovaleric acid is synthesized from valeric acid, which is heated with bromine and concentrated hydrochloric acid to yield the final product, according to the following scheme:
H3CCH(CH3)CO2H → H3CCBr + CH3COCl + HCl
