3-BromomethylpheNylboroNic acid, piNacol ester is a reactive compound that exhibits tyrosinase activity. It is used as a diagnostic tool to identify skin cancer and also as a treatment for the disease. 3-BromomethylpheNylboroNic acid, piNacol ester can be synthesized from 3-bromo-4-(1-pyrrolidinylmethyl)phenol and pyridine, with the reaction mechanism being based on an electrophilic aromatic substitution. The product is then reacted with nicotinic anhydride to produce 3-bromomethylpheNylboroNic acid, piNacol ester. This compound reacts with DNA in tissues to form covalent adducts, which are then detected by fluorescence imaging techniques. This reaction has been shown to be selective for skin cells and not other tissue types such as liver cells or blood cells.
