2-tert-Butyl-1,4-benzoquinone (BBQ) is a reversible covalent redox agent that can be synthesized by the redox cycle of 2-tert-butylhydroquinone with ferric chloride. It is a strong antioxidant and has been shown to inhibit cell proliferation and autophagy in vitro. BBQ also has antioxidative properties when used as a food additive. The redox potential of BBQ is close to the biological potential of hydrogen peroxide, which makes it a good candidate for detecting hydrogen peroxide using electrochemical detector. The chemical structures of BBQ are similar to those of dihydroxybenzoquinones, which are effective inhibitors for the enzymatic activity of human liver monooxygenase.
