N-Butylmagnesium bromide is a reactive chemical that has the formula CH3CH2CH2MgBr. It is used in pharmaceutical preparations and as a reagent in organic synthesis. This compound reacts with hydroxyl groups to form ethers and methyl ketones, which are useful in organic chemistry. N-Butylmagnesium bromide also reacts with fatty acids and aromatic hydrocarbons, forming esters and ethers respectively. N-Butylmagnesium bromide has been shown to have a high detection sensitivity for hepatitis B virus (HBV) RNA and can be used for the isolation of HBV DNA from plasma samples. The compound is also used as a catalyst for polymerization reactions and as an excellent solid catalyst for the hydrogenation of alkenes.
