Gamma-aminobutyric acid is an amide, a molecule with the general formula RCONH2. It has two acid moieties, one of which is a phenolic hydroxyl group. Gamma-aminobutyric acid is a structural analysis that has been shown to have anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial effects against bacteria and fungi. Gamma-aminobutyric acid inhibits fungal growth by inhibiting the enzyme dehydrogenase, which converts alpha ketoglutarate to succinic semialdehyde. Gamma-aminobutyric acid also inhibits bacterial growth by inhibiting the enzyme phenolase, which converts tyrosine to nipecotic acid. The active site on gamma-aminobutyric acid contains the amino group and carboxyl group of condylocarpine, which can be substituted with other amino acids or groups for therapeutic purposes.
