Benzoyl-L-alanine methyl ester is a nucleophile that reacts with chloromethyl ketone in the presence of primary amines to form an amide. The reaction mechanism is based on the addition of a chloride to the acyl group and subsequent substitution by the nucleophile. This process is thermodynamically favored at higher temperatures and kinetic control is observed at lower temperatures. Benzoyl-L-alanine methyl ester has been shown to react with immobilized primary amines, such as sephadex g-100, polyacrylamide gel, and nitrocellulose.
