Boc-D-tyrosine methyl ester (Boc-D-TyrME) is a synthetic analogue of the natural amino acid, tyrosine. It is a ligand for butyrylcholinesterase and has been shown to inhibit lung carcinoma cells in vitro. Boc-D-TyrME binds to the catalytic subunit of butyrylcholinesterase and inhibits its enzymatic activity. This binding reduces the degradation of acetylcholine by butyrylcholinesterase, which leads to an accumulation of acetylcholine at nerve endings and increased neuromuscular transmission. The uptake of Boc-D-TyrME by cancer cells was also demonstrated using a model system in which human lung tissue homogenates were treated with naphthol, a fluorescent dye that binds to proteins. The fluorescence intensity was found to be higher in cancer cells than in noncancerous
