Biphenyl-2-yl-hydrazine hydrochloride (BPH) is a chemical that has been shown to have an effect on the electrical properties of chloroplast membranes. It induces ionic currents in these membranes and alters their permeability. When BPH was applied to ion channels, it had no effect on gramicidin, but inhibited the flash response in the presence of proton flashes. This drug has also been shown to affect the photosynthetic rate by changing parameters such as the maximum quantum yield and the electron transport rate. The effects of BPH on chloroplast membranes are predictable based on its chemical structure and physical properties.
