5-Bromotryptamine hydrochloride (5-BT) is a monoamine oxidase inhibitor that blocks the action of enzymes that break down monoamines. It is used as an analytical reagent in the determination of benzoyl peroxide, benzoate, and 8-methylquinoline. 5-BT is also used in pharmaceutical preparations to inhibit the action of MAO. The chemical structure of 5-BT consists of a chlorine atom at one end and a methyl group at the other. The chlorine atom blocks benzoyl peroxide from reacting with the enzyme, while the methyl group prevents it from reacting with water or oxygen molecules. This makes it suitable for use as an analytical reagent in determining whether benzoyl peroxide has been present.
