Description

1-Benzyl-Azetidine-2-carboxylic acid methyl ester is an acetal that is formed during the reaction of benzaldehyde and acetone. The carbonyl group in the molecule reacts with a nucleophilic acceptor to form a new carbon-carbon bond. The reaction mechanism for this type of reaction is similar to that of nucleophilic substitution reactions, with the exception of the role played by the carbonyl group in stabilizing the negative charge on the oxygen atom. This type of reaction is catalyzed by strong acids, such as sulfuric acid, or strong bases, such as sodium hydroxide. 1-Benzyl-Azetidine-2-carboxylic acid methyl ester can be synthesized from turneforcidine, which is obtained from a chemical modification of tryptophan.
