2-Bromohypoxanthine is a fluorescent analogue of the naturally occurring nucleoside hypoxanthine. It is used as a marker for 2-bromoethoxyacetic acid (2BEA) in human serum and has been shown to be useful for prognosis of metastatic colorectal cancer. 2-Bromohypoxanthine binds to proteins that contain polyunsaturated fatty acids, such as leucovorin and fatty acids, and can be used as a diagnostic tool for detection of these proteins. 2-Bromohypoxanthine is also known to inhibit the proliferation of cancer cells by blocking the growth factor signaling pathway.
