4-(1,3-Benzothiazol-2-yl)aniline is a potent antitumor agent that has been shown to inhibit the growth of cancer cells in vitro and in vivo. It binds to and inhibits the function of epidermal growth factor receptors (EGFRs) on the surface of cancer cells. This binding prevents the activation of EGFRs by their ligands, epidermal growth factor and amphiregulin. 4-(1,3-Benzothiazol-2-yl)aniline also inhibits cyclin D1 and CDK4, which are necessary for cell division. It is also an antimicrobial agent against bacteria and fungi, although it has no effect on mammalian cells.
