Description

5-Bromo-2-methylphenol (5BM) is a synthetic carbinol that is used in the synthesis of carbazole alkaloids. It has been shown to undergo regioselective brominations and rearrangements. 5BM can be synthesized from 2,3,4,5-tetrahydroxybenzaldehyde by reacting it with methyl bromide in the presence of a palladium catalyst. 5BM is also used as an electrophile in organic chemistry reactions. It can be used to synthesize various compounds such as pyridines, indoles, and benzofurans.
