(1-Bromovinyl)trimethylsilane is an epoxidizing agent that is used as a palladium catalyst. It is used for the Sharpless epoxidation of alkenes and alkynes, which are organic compounds with two carbon atoms. This compound can also be used to prepare various epoxy alcohols by reacting in the presence of a base. The (1-bromovinyl)trimethylsilane isomerizes when heated, forming the 1-vinyl trimethylsilane. The preparation of this compound involves passing argon over a heated mixture of chloroform, bromoethane, and silicon tetrachloride. This process yields the desired product in high purity with no other contaminants.
