- Pyrene, 4-bromo-
- 4-Bromopyrene
4-Bromopyrene is a polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) that has carcinogenic properties. It is synthesized by the acetylation of pyrene, which is obtained from coal tar or oil. 4-Bromopyrene can also be formed by the reaction of benzo[a]pyrene with bromine in an acidic environment. The physical appearance of this compound is a pale yellow liquid with a boiling point of 152°C. 4-Bromopyrene has been shown to cause mutations and chromosomal aberrations in calf thymus and bacterial cells. 4-Bromopyrene has also been found to have the potential to act as a catalyst for other chemical reactions in the environment, such as particle and chemical reactions, as well as being able to induce morphological changes in organisms at low concentrations (1 ppm).
