Description :
1,2-Bis(2,4-dimethyl-5-phenyl-3-thienyl)-3,3,4,4,5,5-hexafluoro-1-cyclopentene is a molecule that has been determined to be an ultrafast photochromic material. This compound undergoes reversible ring opening in the presence of UV light. The ring opening process is enabled by the presence of a strong electron withdrawing group on the ring. The molecule also reversibly changes from a long rod to a spherical shape when heated. It is thermally stable and functional theory predicts that it will be oriented in nanowires.
