Bicyclo[2.2.2]oct-7-ene-2,3,5,6-tetracarboxylic dianhydride is a polymer that can be used in a hydrophobic polymer matrix to promote the uptake of pharmaceuticals. It is a polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon with phenyl groups in the ring structure. Bicyclo[2.2.2]oct-7-ene-2,3,5,6-tetracarboxylic dianhydride has been shown to increase albumin and fibrinogen uptake by up to 10 times when used in an albumin matrix system. This polymer has also been shown to have permeability properties that are similar to those of cycloaliphatic polymers such as poly(4-vinylpyridine).
