9-Benzoylcarbazole (9BC) is a carbazole that has been shown to have cancer cell-killing properties. It is synthesized by the reaction of benzaldehyde and acetic acid followed by an oxidation reaction with potassium permanganate. 9BC is activated by light, leading to its fluorescence, which can be used in photodynamic therapy. The compound has been shown to inhibit the growth of various cancer cells, including lung, breast, and melanoma cells. 9BC also inhibits the production of reactive oxygen species (ROS), which are molecules that contain oxygen and are highly reactive due to their unpaired electrons. ROS can cause DNA damage and lead to cell death. 9BC may show promise as a chemotherapeutic agent for treating cancer due to its ability to induce apoptosis in cancer cells without inducing apoptosis in healthy cells.
