3,3'-Bipyridyl is a ligand that is used in coordination chemistry. It has been shown to be an effective catalyst for cross-coupling reactions of aldehydes and nitro groups with nucleophiles. 3,3'-Bipyridyl has also been used as a substituent in bipyridine complexes. In these complexes, the ligand binds to the metal ions by coordinating through its nitrogen atoms. The ligands form mixed ligand complexes with chlorides and aromatic heterocycles such as pyridine or quinoline. 3,3'-Bipyridyl can also be used as an ultrafast optical reporter molecule due to its high fluorescence quantum yield and low photobleaching rate.
