The p-Bromobenzyl chloride (pBB) is a nucleophilic brominating agent that can be used for the preparation of β-unsaturated ketones. It is an activated chlorine with a high electron density, which makes it highly reactive to nucleophiles. The mechanism of the reaction between pBB and nucleophiles has been studied by computational models, which show that the reaction proceeds by way of a reversible electrophilic addition to form a cationic intermediate. This intermediate then reacts with nucleophiles in a second step to form products that are more stable than the original reactant.
