Bromodichloromethane is a disinfectant that is used to clean laboratory surfaces, hospital rooms, and other environments. It has been shown to be genotoxic and carcinogenic in animal models. Bromodichloromethane also inhibits the activity of sorbitol dehydrogenase, an enzyme essential for the conversion of glucose to sorbitol. This substance can also inhibit the growth of oral pathogens such as Streptococcus mutans and Streptococcus sobrinus. Bromodichloromethane is effective against Gram-positive bacteria (e.g., Staphylococcus aureus) but not against Gram-negative bacteria (e.g., Escherichia coli).
