3,5-Bis(trifluoromethyl)benzyl alcohol is a five-membered lactone that is synthesized from cyclopentanone and trifluoroacetic acid. The compound has a gaseous form at room temperature. It can be used to produce polymers with high tensile strength and low weight density. 3,5-Bis(trifluoromethyl)benzyl alcohol is biodegradable and can be recycled by reacting it with formic acid to produce formate esters. Impurities in the compound are found at the position of the carbonyl group on the benzene ring, which can be removed by using an inorganic acid catalyst during synthesis. 3,5-Bis(trifluoromethyl)benzyl alcohol forms a boronic ester when reacted with trimethyl borate and aluminum chloride.
