Bradykinin (1-5) is a peptide hormone that acts on the kinin receptor. Bradykinin is formed from the proteolytic cleavage of pro-kallikrein, a zymogen which is activated by high levels of thrombin as well as other serine proteases. Bradykinin has been shown to inhibit platelet aggregation, induce vasodilation, and stimulate the release of prostaglandins. Bradykinin also inhibits growth factor activity and induces apoptosis in prostate cancer cells. Bradykinin binds to specific receptors on the surface of cells; these receptors are G protein-coupled receptors with seven transmembrane domains. The receptor for bradykinin is known as B2 or B3, depending on the species. The activation of this receptor leads to an increased intracellular calcium ion concentration and an increase in cyclic AMP production, which can activate protein kinase A and phospholipase C enzymes
