Biphenylene is a diphenyl ether with a redox potential of 0.5 V and is chemically stable. It has a high thermal expansion coefficient and good transport properties. Biphenylene is a biphenyl compound that can be used in the synthesis of pharmaceuticals, such as insulin-stimulated glucose, and palladium-catalyzed coupling reactions. Its chemical biology has been shown to have anti-inflammatory effects on human macrophages by inhibiting the production of reactive oxygen species (ROS). Hydrogen fluoride has been shown to react with biphenylene to form 2,3-dihydrobenzofuran.
