- Tert-Butyl(Ethynyl)Dimethylsilane
Asymmetric synthesis of formyl acetylene is achieved by the use of tert-butyldimethylsilyl acetylene, which is activated with an energy of 50 kcal/mol. This reaction is shown to proceed through a photophysical process in which a singlet excited state (S*) is converted to a triplet excited state (T*). The T* state has been shown to react with terminal alkynes, leading to bond cleavage and formation of a helical structure. A linker can be used for orientation of the S* and T* states. Steady-state fluorescence measurements have been used as a probe for intramolecular hydrogen bonds. Functional theory calculations have been used to model the energetics of the system.
