Description

Boswellic acid is a macrocyclic pentacyclic triterpene that has been isolated from the gum resin of the plant Boswellia serrata. This compound has been shown to inhibit viral replication and to have anti-inflammatory properties in mice. Boswellic acid inhibits the production of pro-inflammatory cytokines by inhibiting cyclooxygenase 2 (COX2). It also prevents the production of 3-acetyl-beta-boswellic acid, which is an active metabolite that leads to inhibition of COX1. Boswellic acid also inhibits CD4+ T helper cells, thereby reducing cell proliferation and enhancing antibody production in mice. The molecule's molecular electrostatic potential can be used to determine its binding affinity for various tissues in the body.
