Barium pentafluoroaluminate (BaAlF5) is a compound that is used as an adjuvant in the production of aluminum. It is used to increase the rate at which metal oxide reacts with air, and also to reduce the amount of oxygen required for metal oxide reactions. BaAlF5 can be found in minerals such as fluorite, apatite, and feldspar, although it has not been found in nature. It is often synthesized by heating barium fluoride in a vacuum chamber with aluminum foil. The barium pentafluoroaluminate can be separated from the other substances by heating the mixture to 800 degrees Celsius and allowing it to cool slowly. BaAlF5 can also be obtained by reacting aluminum trifluoride with either magnesium or silicon tetrachloride.
