Phenytoin is a drug that is used as an anticonvulsant to treat epilepsy and other seizure disorders. It is also used to control the symptoms of generalized tonic-clonic seizures, and to prevent or delay the onset of seizures in people with epilepsy who are undergoing brain surgery. Phenytoin has been shown to have anticonvulsant activity in mice, rats, guinea pigs, and rabbits. The maximal effect occurs at 0.5-1 mg/kg given subcutaneously or intraperitoneally, but this dose may be lethal in some animals. Phenytoin also has analogs that are more potent than phenytoin itself. These analogs include ethotoin, mephenytoin, and methsuximide.
