1-[1-(1-Benzothiophen-2-Yl)Cyclohexyl]-3-(Fluoromethyl)Piperidine (BZTCHP) is a radiolabeled substrate for the dopamine transporter. It has been used in positron emission tomography studies to monitor dopaminergic nerve terminal degeneration and reuptake in Parkinson's disease patients who have undergone deep brain stimulation surgery. BZTCHP binds to the dopamine transporter, preventing the uptake of dopamine by neurons. This prevents the formation of dopamine from L-DOPA, which is needed for normal motor function. BZTCHP has been shown to be effective in reducing symptoms of hemiparkinsonism when given orally.
