This chemical has been shown to react with thiolates and silver ions to form reactive oxygen species that can kill bacteria. 2-(9-Oxoxanthen-2-yl)propionic Acid also dimerizes with anions such as chloride or fluoride under irradiation, leading to a change in the optical properties of the material.
